Hollywood Feed, LLC is voluntarily recalling 9 lots of individually sold Made In South America Brand Pig Ears due to a potential for the product to contain Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product (UPC 819895022444) is sold from bulk bins in Hollywood Feed Stores in the United States and is manufactured by Dog Goods USA LLC.

Hollywood Feed recommends that all individually sold Made In South America Pig Ear product from the following lots or any product with an unknown lot code should be destroyed. There have been no reports of Salmonella illness linked to this product to date.

Hollywood Feed discovered the potential problem following a self-initiated audit while researching the potential hazards involved with conventional bulk display methods. All of our Made In South America Pig Ear products receive 3 rd party testing and are subject to kill steps prior to being released to distribution. All product lots tested negative for Salmonella prior to entering commerce. In order to better evaluate if there was any risk involved with the display of unwrapped bulk pig ears, Hollywood Feed collected samples from 100 store locations between August 9 th and September 27 th , 2019. These samples were sent to a 3 rd party laboratory to test for Salmonella.

We received 100 negative tests (some stores had multiple samples) and 3 positive tests from this self- initiated audit. Species of Salmonella for one test was received and identified as Salmonella Enteriditis. This species is most often associated with poultry farming and chicken eggs. Due to the extensive kill steps employed by Hollywood Feed with each lot and the presence of multiple negative tests for these lots both before and after distribution, we believe that contamination occurred on-site at the individual store locations after coming into contact with people or animals who interacted with the bulk displays.

All affected product was pulled from the 3 stores following confirmation of the results. Retests were performed on the product pulled from two of these stores and all secondary tests were negative for Salmonella. Any unknown or identified lots were pulled from shelves at all Hollywood Feed locations and put on Stop Sale on October 7 th , 2019 as a precaution.
