Fall is quickly approaching! In fact, it starts on September 23rd. The weather is already starting to cool off, and this is a great opportunity to get out of the house with your dog, soak up some sunshine, and get a little exercise for you both!
Fall is just the right time of year to be outdoors. It’s not too hot and not too cold, and the humidity is negligible. Include your dog in activities that you love to do on the weekend, such as hiking, biking, or camping. Also, even though it may be too cold for you to go swimming, your dog is probably up for it for a little while longer! My Annie will swim all year long if I let her. Last winter she jumped in the lake at the dog park while a thin layer of ice was covering it, and she didn’t even seem to know the difference!
You can also squeeze in some outdoor play time after work another couple of months, as Daylight Savings Time is ending on November 2nd. So, enjoy a long walk with your dog, play fetch in your backyard, or make a quick trip to your local dog park.
This will be good for your dog’s health and weight, and will provide mental stimulation. It will also help bring you and your dog closer together by spending quality time doing things she loves. Just thirty minutes a day can be very beneficial. Annie’s favorite game is fetching in the water, and this really helps to calm her down for the rest of the day. After a day at the dog park, she sleeps really well at night! My other dogs, Fitzgerald and Skeeter, love to get outdoors just as much, but they don’t express the same…ahem….enthusiasm that Annie does.
